About FRACTAL RAIN by Terry Welker, FAIA, at the DML Main Branch:
1. Inspired by the Dayton Art Institute's Water Lilies (Monet), the 'fractalized' Chimu Mummy Mask, and Dayton's River history.
2. Proposed in 2014, created in 2015/2016, installed 2017.
3. 36' H x 118' W x 4'-13' D, total weight - 1000 lbs.
4. 4.8 miles of stainless steel wire.
5. 1/3 mile of extruded acrylic prisms.
6. 3768 5/8" x 6" prisms are heat welded to an equal number of 6' long steel wires.
7. 1 in 6 prisms, 456 total, under the skylight are optically dyed in studio in Monet palette colors of lavender, green, blue, yellow, and pink.
8. 389 10mm clear, dichroic coated, bi-cone Swarovski crystals.
9. 8900 bends by hand machines on the steel wires.
10. 200 ft. of 3/8", 36 strand, stainless steel suspension cable, installed by Sofco.
11. 78 Swiss stainless steel stabilizing cable buttons.
12. 1/10" A316 full hardness spring steel wire, tensile strength 187,849 psi, manufactured by Illini Wire.
13. Custom bending by O'Hare Spring.
14. Electropolishing of steel wires by Electrolytic.
15. Prisms cut, flame polished and CNC drilled by Polymershapes.
